Similar to ball joints, tie rod ends use a ball and socket joint to enable a wide range of motion.  This allows the rods to steer the can while allowing the suspension to move up and down.  It is important to follow the assembly manual torque specs when tightening the nut onto the steering assembly.  A cotter pin keeps the nut from loosening over time.
